You need to use a product that protects the hair shaft from the heat. Straighteners get really hot! Try #12 from Redken (the name ?), it is a product that protects the hair from heat and does a great job helping to straighten. Try using Redken's Spray Starch for additional straightness!

Definitely try the Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Flat Iron spray. It really makes my hair flat, smooth, and keeps it like that all day long. It comes in a bright pink bottle. I think it works really well...better than anything else I have tried. You might also want to check out the Shampoo and Conditioner although I use the Dangerously Straight Shampoo with the No more Frizziness Conditioner (Orange....this one is sold out at my stores alot, but I love love it). Have fun straightening =).
