What hair product should i use for holding up my thick hair?

i have straight, thick and long hair.. and its growing longer.. and my hair is pressing down overall.. which looks like a mushroom head..i want to spike part of my hair and hold it ... i have been using hard wax and also tried gel.. but they last for an hour or two before my hair goes back into the same state again (the mushroom state)..

so what product will i need to hold and spike my hair and keep it that way for at least a day? What hair product should i use for holding up my thick hair?
I agree with popcorn...Use Aussie hairspray...It's pretty strong. I have the same hair texture as you, straight, thick and long, and it works for me.What hair product should i use for holding up my thick hair?
I use stuff called ';Alberto Rework, Fibre Putty'; along with any extra strong hair spray depending on the look I'm going for. My hair is long and fairly thick and I can keep it straight up all day with that stuff. (Just don't rub it. It really isn't ';reworkable'; and once it dries it freezes like that.
Are you spiking your hair like a mohawk? Look into DAX. A friend in high school used it for his mohawk. You can probably find it at any drugstore, but I believe the specific product you want is DAX: High and Tight.
