My hair is now just about totally grey. But it is a dull grey. My mother-in-law's hair turned a bright shinny white before she died. My hair was a very dark brown, almost black. I am of Native American descent. I would love to have beautiful grey or white hair. I am 66 years old. Any advise for me?Any of you senior ladies have any advise for me on a hair product?
Shimmer lights to highlight and brighten and make grey or white hair shine, as mentioned above. Sally Beauty Supply or any public beauty supply store should carry this product, or better yet, a generic version of it. The generic version is just as good. I have recommended it to customers that wanted to purchase it for home use. It is a bluing shampoo which will tone down any yellowing in a persons hair and give a sheen. I do recommend a good hair conditioner with this product. You may notice the bluing shampoo leaving the hair a bit coarse in the shower, so just add a good conditioner afterwards and it will be fine. I recommend using it a few times a week with a clarifying shampoo inbetween the bluing occasionally to keep from getting a bluish color buildup. It's easy to use. Just back off a day or so of using it, and use a clarifying shampoo if you see the color buildup. You can buy inexpensive clarifying shampoo at pharmacies and Walmarts. I believe you will really like the bluing shampoo.Any of you senior ladies have any advise for me on a hair product?
If you have product build up on your hair, use about a cup of vinegar and an equal part water as a rinse on it. The vinegar will strip product build up that is causing dullness.
As for color, you may need to consult a professional hair stylist regarding coloring it. I am actually surprised you don't have beautiful white hair since brunettes usually turn white whereas blondes tend to turn grey.
I would advise you to go to a salon %26amp; tell the stylist what it is you're looking for in hair color. If you're okay with getting your hair colored, then both the stylist %26amp; you can look at hair color swatches %26amp; agree on a color just right for you. Sometimes, dull hair is due to the hair products we use on our hair over a long period of time. If you have used shampoo with Balsam in it, it will coat your hair like honey %26amp; cause a build up, that will affect hair color. I don't know of a hair product that will safely strip hair products from the hair. That's why I suggest you go to a professional for expert advice. Quite often, medications can affect ones hair %26amp; skin. If you take any, it can be a cause for dull hair. Let a pro help you %26amp; enjoy a new look.
My black hair started going white a while ago and for a bunch of years I used to dye it but hated to...so I just quit and now about half my head is white--yea, it's going white in sections, not in the normal salt and pepper. I have been using Clairol's Shimmer Lights for a year just to keep the white ones (I love 'em) white--sparkling white like snowflakes. You have to leave it in from 3-5 mins. before rinsing out. I think they also make a conditioner but I don't seem to need it, the shampoo leaves my hair soft and smooth. But I can't find it in my local stores so I have to buy off the internet.
There's also Pantene Silver Expressions--which doesn't work for me. It says just massage it into your hair and rinse. Maybe if you left it in for 3-5 mins it might work, let the purple stuff work to take out the yellow and brighten up the white but they don't say to do that.
There's also this stuff that Jamie Curtis recommends called Phyto Phytargent but it's quite expensive (and, again, I can't find it in my local stores and I live in a fair size city).
L'Oreal also makes Colorist Collection White Violet Shampoo (supposedly for blondes--yes, you can think of us as ';white'; blonde I guess :) even though some of us never wanted to be blondes). Can't say anything about this stuff since I've never used it. Smells like fruit though.
My mom had gorgeous snowy white hair
but she hated it!! She ALWAYS dyed it blond,,,except for once when she was in the hospital for nearly 2 months....everyone was telling her how beautiful it was but she detested it! She dyed it 2 days after getting home!
My hair is going white at the temples but is dullish (ugly) gray in the back (not that I ever let more than a half inch of it show!!) If mine was 100% white I would love that but I do abhor the salt and pepper look and most shades of gray so I dye mine religiously every 4 weeks.
I think the yellow removing products will intensify white hair but if the hair is gray,,,those products will not make it white. If I were in your shoes and wanted to go for the totally white look I would go to a salon once to see what they advise and after that, if I liked the result of what they did, I would use the products at home. Good luck!!
I will continue to dye...for now anyway!
Clairol makes a line called, ';Shimmer Lights'; that is supposed to brighten and lighten grey hair. I can't vouch for it personally, I';ll be fighting the grey to the bitter end!
